Kosiarska robota / Nice Work on Kos

So, I spent the summer on a distant island of Kos, totally new to me. In fact, Greece had never been a destination I would choose, be it for work or holiday, in the first place. History at school was all right BUT the ancient one. And, as it occurred, as part of the Island Tour, I was to guide Polish tourists through the ancient hospital where Hippokrates established his first medical school. So, I set to study; bought myself National Geographic whose latest summer edition had a brilliant article on ancient Greek healing methods ! Just perfect timing :). And so the ancient history claimed me...
I worked as a rep for an international tour operator where two foreign languages were a must.

Yamas!
The sporty version of the uniform which I wore for the Island Tour.  Here, in the winery with the opportunity to taste seven local wines. Yamas!

On my arrival, I was faced with absolutely wonderful and exceptionally scenic landscapes where the sea boasted all shades of blue, green and azzuro. However, during high season, when it was extremely hot, the photographs of the scenic landscapes were never sharp due to mist hanging over the sea

Wschodni cypelek wyspy prawie dotyka Turcji. Półwysep Bodrum. The eastern cape of Kos almost touches Turkey's Bodrum peninsula.

Those lifejackets scattered on the beach did not appear until July

I was accommodated in a village in a small holiday appartment with no air conditioning ! But I had a brilliant virew over the sea from my tiny balcony and 300 m to the beach, which was uniquely large and sandy compared to others on the island.

The beach was partly wild, with no civilised sunbeds, and sometimes in the morning German version of wildness could be noticed.

My task was to care about Polish tourists in the hotels and at the airport. Our uniform blouses were made of artificial fabric and the last summer was exceptionally hot, so I was melting most of the time. The island of Kos is famous for its winds. Well, we had strong winds and thunderstorms in May, at night - during the day the sun never failed to occur. And suddenly, in mid July it stopped blowing. And then a hurricane started: the inflated boats influx.
In May, the immigrants were few and were spending their time at the door of the Tourist Police:

Smród fekaliczny i zaduch z suszonych gaci i ręczników (+35°). Niektórzy restauratorzy zaczęli się buntować, bo tracili klientów jeżeli mieli nieszczęście prowadzić swój biznesik obok "chrześcijańskich Syryjczyków".

Following the June shooting raid at the Tunesian beach, the arrivals looked like an invasion of small dinghies on the Koan shores. The Syrians were fished out of the coloured crowd and taken to hotels for they had solid documents on them. All illegal visitors were dwelling on the pavements and under the castle, which is a tourist attraction. The pieces of their clothes or towels were put out on the bushes to dry which gave out dull odour (+35°). Some restaurant owners were trying to get rid of them not to completely lose their customers because of the "Christian Syrians".

At one point, the immigrants were gathered in the old stadium and following a short clash with the police ("we want bread and water" "send more officials to register us") the situation started to swell.

The illegal immigrants were camping on the city boulevard overlooking Turkey. Every day some 200-300 more were sailing in. Still no wind....

This is the city beach where they slept and camped.

In mid August I witnessed the scene when a small, junky pick-up arrived with water, oranges and some crackers for the "refugees". There was no rush to get a slice of food. But the photographers placed themselves on top of the car and took pictures of the few hands sticking up trying to reach the better bites. You can imagine what it looked like in the media? Here you see what it was in reality :)

The refugees were very modestly interested in the aid taking their share and returning in a dignified way to their tents and towels on the ground.

Chyba skonsumowali
Tea time :)
On that day, the Mayor of Kos appeared on the boulevard, close to the old stadium. Asked by a few journalists said the city was not prepared to receive so many illegal arrivals thus there were not enough officials to do the work (giving airs of his disapproval to the immigrants' expectations as if it was his obligation to wait ready for them). He announced that a cruiser be provided to keep the coloured crowd away from the city centre and to register them, this time by several new officials.

The cruiser sailed away to Athens after a couple of days. She came back after about 2 weeks to remain for another week. In the meantime the immigrants had been occupying all the busiest places in town.

Do końca sierpnia, Kos Town w centralnym miejscu oferował takie widoki:
Until the end of August, the central sites of Kos Town looked like this:

The situation changed in early September. The Police ribbonned off the boulveard lawns and the restaurant owners gave out a sigh of relief.

But, whenever there was gap between the ribbons, there you are - they squeezed in!

ludzie poszli, a pontony zostały ....
The people were forced away but the rubber boats remained

Whereas, on the beach just next to the Police station, the messy camp site continued....

In mid September, the situation improved significantly: plastic toilets were provided at the foot of the castle (beforehand they were doing the same in the same place), some UNO agency had sent rugs, charity members were distributing snadwiches and fruit and water and I myself saw many of the arrival eat it.

On the other hand, the electronic communication devices they sported, made some of the Greek locals furious....

It's Kos speaking, Allah akbar, commander I report I have hit the land of the unfaithful !

the cruiser sailed away on 18th September. I ;left a few days later, thus do not know the aftermath...

Syryjskie matki z dziećmi :)
Syrian mothers with children :)
At the Police Station, I saw riot Police in early September. The Mayor must have got support. I have heard that there were some clashes between the men of various shades of colour based on some tiny religious issues.... Hm...

Just before I flew home, I spoke to an acquaintant who runs an office on the bouleverad. He told me that a few days before he had been speaking to a German official sent by a government agenda to find out if any of the dwellers in Kos could be of any use in Germany. The man speaks Arabic and aksed them several questions. One of them was why they did not seek shelter in Saudi Arabia or Dubai etc. The answer was "In Saudi Arabia the sun is too hot and Europe is for free".
And he did not come across any skilled workers, obviously.
There is one more aspect to it: many tour operators had to earlier terminate their arrivals because many holiday makers were simply afraid of the immigrant situation on Kos and either cancelled their bookings or chose other destinations. Does EU care about their own citizens ???

And one more thing: the Syrian war has been going on for about 4 years - had they not seen a map of the Meditteranean before ??
